The drive
Deadwood to Mount Rushmore is about 50 miles and roughly an hour and 15 minutes each way, south through the Black Hills toward Keystone. The route climbs and curves the whole way, which is part of the scenery and part of why people would rather ride than drive it themselves. Summer traffic near the memorial and winter ice on the grades both add time.

A good Mount Rushmore day from Deadwood
- Mount Rushmore National Memorial: the carving, the Avenue of Flags, the Presidential Trail loop, and the museum. Parking is a flat fee at the memorial; your driver drops you past it.
- Crazy Horse Memorial: about 17 miles further south, the largest mountain carving in progress anywhere
- Keystone: gift shops, the 1880 Train, and lunch before the ride home
- Iron Mountain Road and the pigtail bridges: a scenic alternate route worth asking about
Plan around the season
Summer is busy and bright; the memorial's evening lighting ceremony runs in the warm months and makes for a memorable late trip. Winter is quiet and the carving against snow is striking, but the drive demands respect.
